Led Product Development, Technical Service, Market Development and Plant Support for filled & reinforced polyolefins, moisture-crosslinkable silane-grafted polyolefins, TPEs, TPVs and halogen & zero halogen FR & non-FR wire & cable compounds. Developed many new reactive processed alloys, blends, and composite compounds for new application resulting in profitable new annual sales of $50 million. Doubled sales for 4 product lines to over $100 million annually and turned around profitability. 2001 – 2002, FiberTech Polymers, Inc., Chief Technology Officer &Senior VP, Newport Beach, CA.Carried out product development, marketing, business development, and customer technical service for this startup plastics compounding business.Developed and marketed proprietary cellulose fiber polyolefin master batch additive for injection molding, profile & sheet extrusion and thermoforming.
1995 - 2001, International Paper, Tuxedo, NY & Loveland, OH. Project Manager. Initiated and developed applications for technology of cellulose & wood fiber-reinforced polymer / plastic composites for various applications. Demonstrated technical & commercial feasibility for two applications in housing & construction and several applications in packaging with a total profit value greater than $500 million /year. Manager, Applied Polymer Science. Led technical group to initiate, execute and commercialize projects that provide value related to the use of polymers and coatings in packaging and other markets. Provided technical expertise in the area of polymers, films and advanced packaging materials. Initiated several new projects in the areas of fillers, blends, composites, release, sealing & adhesion, co-extrusion, innovative designs for expanding existing products and entering new markets. 1986 - 1992, BP Chemicals, Hackettstown, NJ. Business & General Manager, POLYBOND Products (now part of Crompton Corp.-Uniroyal Chemicals). Developed & implemented strategic plan to grow specialty business 9 times in 6 years. Introduced 10 new products to increase market share in specialty polymers market niche from 17% to 70% in 1986-92. Personally handled international sales & marketing and global new business development. Supervised technical, commercial and other staff. Provided technical leadership and directed new product/process development, R&D, product introduction, strategic direction and planning, HSEQ, technical service, patents & licensing, capital improvements, QC/QA, worldwide marketing, sales and distribution and other functions for this small business unit. Products are produced by reactive grafting process and are used by compounders and end-users in automotive, appliance, carpeting, business machines, diaper, housing & construction, medical devices, business machines and packaging industries to significantly enhance performance of compounded alloys, blends and composites and as adhesives for polymers and metals. Developed new business by developing new applications and new markets. Handled purchasing negotiations and sales contracts with customers. Duties included P & L responsibility, budget preparation and monthly financial reporting for this specialty polymer product line. Instrumental in selling off the TPR® business along with 4 new inventions for a premium and reorganized staff after spin-off after improving quality and doubled plant production rate of thermoplastic elastomer product line dramatically in 6 months in 1988. 1984 - 1986, Air Products and Chemicals, Allentown, PA, Senior Principal Applications Engineer & Project Leader, Developed a proprietary PVOH-based copolymer oxygen barrier for flexible & rigid food packaging market & demonstrated its technical & commercial feasibility. Purchased, installed & operated a multi-layer co-extrusion & thermoforming pilot plant unit.
1979 - 1984, Chemplex Co. (now part of Lyondell-Basell), Rolling Meadows, IL, Research Scientist. Conducted new product development, scale-up, technical service and application development in polyethylene and Plexar® (polyolefin-based specialty extrudable adhesive product line) as tie-layers in multi-layer co-extrusion blown & cast film and sheet. Developed many new high margin products for FDA compliant applications.
1968-1974, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Bombay, India, Scientific Officer. Conducted R&D on the use of Gamma, EB& other high energy radiation in modifying POM, polyesters, styrenics and other polymers and developing wood-polymer composites, bamboo-polymer composites, concrete-polymer composites, bagasse-flyash polymer composites.
